Pickles in a Kool-Aid Bath!

pickle 1As a kid growing up in the humid summers of East St. Louis, Illinois, you could always find me & my cousins running around playing tag or hide-and-seek with pockets full of candy. Our Grandma owned a confectionery store and every day we use to hang out there and eat up all her candy! Push-Pops, Mambas, Ring Pops, Pop Rocks, Boston Baked Beans, Lemonheads, Chico Sticks, Sugar Daddy, Big League Chew, Nerds, Charleston Chews, Atomic Fireballs, and of course Now-and-Later which we proudly pronounced Now-a-ladas! Awww the 80s, that was the life! (I’m showing my age here!) It’s amazing that I didn’t have a mouth full of cavities now that I sit here and think about all this!

High on sugar and high on life, we’d smack and chew and laugh until our belly hurt. But no day was complete without our favorite treat of all, a big ole’ pickle filled with a peppermint stick! Yeah, you read that right, LOL! A sour pickle filled with a sweet peppermint stick! YUMMY!! (Don’t judge me until you’ve tried it!) I can still see my Mom’s face, scrunched up in disgust, looking at me gagging while asking, “How in the world are you eating that?”

How we came up with this delicious treat or who introduced us to it…beats me?! But nothing is better than a pickle & a peppermint stick! And if you could get your hands on a hot pickle, even better!! That is, what my kids would say, “Off the Chain!” (That means good!)

So the other day when a Twitter friend posted a picture of herself eating a “KOOLICKLE,” I have to admit, I was curious. At first glance, I didn’t even recognize it as a pickle because it was RED and SLIMY like a leech! (Ewww! I’m sure my facial expression matched my Mom’s at that moment!) But after more & more people chimed in and she continued to post pictures, ranting and raving about how good it was, I gave in. A spin-off of my favorite childhood treat, why not? After all, it’s summertime!

After Googling a recipe, we went to Walmart and spent less than $10 buying the ingredients. I noticed there were two different methods to how people added the sugar & kool-aid to the pickles, so we did both. (See below for the recipes.) As you can see from the pictures, my twins Kahlil & Cameron, had more fun with the ingredients than actually trying to make the Koolickles! BOYS!

Every recipe recommended that you keep them refrigerated for a week, in order to really absorb the flavor, so for next week’s post, I’ll upload a video of us discovering this new treat! (A video? Uh, oh! You’ve been warned, my kids are really animated, so I’m certain they are going to overplay the taste of eating a pickle soaked in a kool-aid bath!)

See ya next week!

XOXO
