Sometime today, Trump or Hillary will be named the 45th president of the United States. Like you, I’ve been completely bent out of shape during this whole process. I’ve allowed it to overwhelm me with fear, anxiety, stress, worry, you name it. I’ve looked at people differently, questioned their heart, their morals, their faith, and whether their friendship towards me is truly genuine, all because they are voting for the opposing candidate. Which, when I sit back and think about it, is complete foolishness.
Yesterday I was listening to the radio and this Christian song by Building 429 came on called “Where I Belong.” I’ve heard this song a hundred times, but at that moment I really listened to it. The chorus sang, “All I know is I’m not home yet. This is not where I belong. Take this world and give me Jesus. This is not where I belong.”
Then the Holy Spirit reminded me of Philippians 3:20 which says, “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” In other words, this election is not the end. As Christian people (assuming you believe in Jesus like me; but if not, keep reading!) we must think and act like Abraham.
Hebrews 11:9-10 basically says that Abraham lived in the promise land [Earth] as if it were a foreign country, but that he was always looking forward to the city whose builder is God. The city built by God is Heaven. Heaven is our home. Heaven is the end result.
This election, the next election and the one after that is not the final chapter of our lives. So the outcome of this election doesn’t really matter. This may sound naïve, like wishful thinking, but if you truly know the love of God and have experienced it, then you know His word is true. And it should bring you peace and comfort to know that regardless of who becomes president, God is still in control. Jesus still saves. Because ultimately this world is temporary and it will pass away.
So pray, cast your vote, and when the results are revealed, rest in the peace of Jesus. But if Jesus is not the Lord of your life, it’s simple to ask Him to be. Just say the Prayer of Salvation below and that’s it! Then Heaven will also be your home, maybe your mansion will be next to mine!
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me [Jesus]. In my Father’s house are many mansions. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” John 14:1-3
While I do say confidently that the results of this election don’t matter, it’s still very important for you to vote. As Christians and as American citizens (even if temporary), we are still obligated to make OUR voices heard, to be the light of the world, to preach and save the lost. While I can’t tell you who to vote for, like my husband told me last night, “God used Saul before he became Paul.”
If you’re not familiar with that Bible story, Saul was a ruthless murderer who destroyed the lives of Christians. He literally launched a holy war against the Church! He craved notoriety, prestige and power. He had a huge ego and as my grandmother would say, ‘was on his high horse;’ he was everything opposite of God. Then one day, God spoke to him and blinded him. God humbled Saul and turned him into his #1 believer. Saul became Paul and Paul ended up writing almost the entire New Testament! So maybe the winning candidate is Saul! Maybe God is raising up a bad president to use for His glory! You never know…but either way it doesn’t matter. Our sole purpose here in this foreign country is to make His name great! To spread the Gospel! So let’s put away our fear, our anxiety, our stress, and our worry and be a light in this world of darkness.
God in heaven, I come to you in the name of Jesus. I acknowledge to You that I am a sinner, and I am sorry for my sins and the life that I have lived; I need your forgiveness. I believe that your only Son Jesus Christ shed His blood on the cross and died for my sins, and I am now willing to turn from my sin. You said in Your Word, Romans 10:9 that if we confess the Lord our God and believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead, we shall be saved. Right now I confess Jesus as the Lord of my soul. With my heart, I believe that God raised Jesus from the dead. I accept Jesus Christ as my own personal Savior and according to His Word, right now I am saved. Thank you Jesus for your unlimited grace which has saved me from my sins. Jesus transform my life so that I may bring glory and honor to you alone and not to myself. Thank you Jesus for dying for me and giving me eternal life. AMEN.
