My son Isaiah came up with this cool blog name. I wanted something quirky and fun and when he said it, I was like, ‘oh yeah, that’s it!’ One More Than Six equals Seven. There are seven of us. My husband Aaron & I have five children, four teenage boys and a little princess. My twins Kahlil & Cameron are 15, AJ is 14, Isaiah is 13 & Ms. Taylor is almost 7.
When you walk into my home I have a sign that reads “Welcome to Our Happy, Loud, Crazy, Fun, Loving Home!” This describes us perfectly! There is always something going on in the Overton household and while most times it’s hilarious and extremely entertaining, other times, I just need to vent!…err, I mean talk to someone about how awesome it is raising five children!
Don’t get me wrong, I am blessed with beautiful, healthy children and the joy of being their Mother is truly fulfilling and I thank God for them every day. But every Mother needs that moment of exhale, to scream in her pillow, to cry when she’s overwhelmed or to just share her experiences with others so she knows, she is not alone. It’s hard being a Mom. There’s no manual, no guidelines, no rule book, it’s kind of like trial and error day by day. Some days I feel like I’ve hit a home-run and other times I feel like I’ve struck out.
But I’ve learned some things over the years that have helped other Moms, that may help you; such as, developing structure/time management (to maintain my sanity), getting my boys to freely tell me everything (although sometimes I think they tell me too much!); how a crockpot can save your life (and with five children, trust me, it’s a lifesaver); and most importantly, how to raise “cool” Christian sons in a sex-crazed world.
There are also some things I have yet to figure out, like how to get my boys rooms from smelling like sweaty socks & musty armpits, why I have to repeat myself 3x before they do what I tell them to, and why, oh why, is my husband turning Taylor into a tomboy, when I want a PRINCESS! Yes, she’s running around in tutus & tiaras but she’s wearing them while playing mud football in the backyard! (HELP!! I really wanted her to be a ballet dancer!) (sigh)
My friends tell me almost daily that my family needs a reality show! LOL! While that won’t be happening anytime soon, I do hope that in the meantime, this blog, “One More Than Six,” can be an inspiration to you, and you can be inspiration to me. I’ll share my casual, but very honest thoughts and experiences and you share your comments.
So go ahead and subscribe and every week I’ll email you a quick heartfelt post. Let’s navigate through motherhood together!
